Song Dong. Installation Artist. Beijing.

Song Dong used 10,000 of his mother's personal belongings in his most recent installation called Waste Not, currently on exhibit at the Barbican Centre in London. Dong's mother, Zhao Xiangyuan, was born into a prosperous family in 1937 but the huge political changes of the '50s+'60s meant family fortunes waned. Dong's father was branded a counter-revolutionary. "In that time my mother's life was very hard. So she started to keep everything, even the smallest things seemed quite valuable. Then later China opened up and my family started to become wealthier again. But my mother still refused to throw anything away. Her motto was always 'waste not'." Dong's mother died in 2009 but he had started work on his project four years earlier. In part he was documenting what had happened to his family, looking back at China's years of change.

Patrick Dougherty. Sculptor. North Carolina.

Filmed by Gary Tyler Mcleod & Austin Will.

Combining his carpentry skills with his love of nature, Patrick Dougherty utilizes primitive techniques of building to experiment with tree saplings as construction material. Since beginning in 1980, Patrick has left his mark with over two hundred massive sculptures all over the world. Fantastical.

Before I Die. By Candy Chang & Her Neighbors. New Orleans.

Inspiring indeed.

"With support from old and new friends, I turned the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood into a giant chalkboard to invite my neighbors to remember and share what is important to them. Before I Die transforms neglected spaces into constructive ones where we can learn the hopes and aspirations of the people around us. It’s about improving both our physical spaces and our individual well-being (...) If you’re in New Orleans, stop by 900 Marigny St. to add your thoughts. I believe the design of our public spaces can better reflect what’s important to us as residents and as human beings." - Candy Chang: Public installation artist, designer, urban planner, and co-founder of Civic Center.

NEW Jackson Slattery. Artist. Melbourne/Montreal.

Watercolour.

Painted 'stains' ceiling.

Jackson painted the 'mosaic woman' from a photo he found, which inspired his mosaic sculpture.

'PARADISE' spelled in foam, paint. (faux-marble: Slattery style).

'BEACH BOYS' lettered in work.

Paintings based on photos of marble, which inspired Jacksons 'marble' sculptures.
Jackson hand-made the stickers seen on the glass 'window'... I love the NO FEAR reference and Beach Boys theme throughout his recent work.
