SUNO & Tory Burch. Resort 2012. NY.
Designer Erin Beatty.
UNO was formed in 2008 by Max Osterweis after more than a decade of collecting textiles from visits to Kenya. The prospect that Kenya's recent post election turmoil might keep foreigners from visiting in a country overflowing with natural resources and talent became the catalyst to actually do something with the fabrics. SUNO employs local Kenyan talent, treats workers fairly, and showcases some of Kenya's artistry, contributing to positive social and economic change. The design and development takes place in NYC's Garment District. Most of the collection is then produced in Kenya with tailors who, although already quite skilled, also receive regular training by expert tailors. At least 70% of production is done in Kenya, beaded and embroidered work in India, and a handful of pieces are made in NYC.
